LAHORE: Pakistan hockey players have expressed renewed confidence and determination after securing qualification for the FIH Hockey World Cup, saying improved support from management and government officials has boosted morale and strengthened their belief in the future of the sport.
Pakistan striker Ahmed Nadeem, who played a key role during the qualifiers, said his personal ambition is to continue scoring goals for the national side and help Pakistan regain its lost glory on the international stage.
Speaking in an interview, Nadeem said the team is now fully focused on delivering strong performances at the World Cup and eventually earning a place at the Olympic Games. “As a striker my responsibility is to score goals and contribute to Pakistan’s victories. We want to make our nation proud and prove that Pakistan hockey still has the ability to compete with the world’s best,” he said.
Nadeem also highlighted a noticeable change in the way hockey players are being treated, praising the current administration for providing better facilities and professional protocols. According to him, the team is now receiving a level of respect and support that had rarely been experienced in the past.
Pakistan goalkeeper Muneeb Ur Rehman expressed similar sentiments, acknowledging the role played by national leadership and sports authorities in motivating the team during the qualifying campaign.
He pointed to the announcement of financial rewards for players as an encouraging step and revealed that discussions are underway regarding central contracts, insurance coverage, and other welfare initiatives that could significantly improve the security of players’ careers.
Muneeb credited Pakistan’s World Cup qualification—achieved after an eight-year absence—to a collective effort by players and management despite difficult circumstances. He also stressed the need for further professional support as the team prepares for the global tournament.
“Looking ahead to the World Cup, physical conditioning will be crucial. We need a dedicated fitness trainer and additional technical expertise to compete at the highest level,” he said, adding that head coach Khawaja Junaid is exploring the possibility of bringing in foreign coaching assistance.
Among the emerging stars of the team is young striker Mohammad Ammad, who described the World Cup qualification as a proud moment for the entire squad. Ammad scored a decisive goal against Japan in the semi-final of the qualifying tournament, earning the Player of the Match award.
