Scheme to nowhere?

The Prime Minister’s Electric Bike and Rickshaw Scheme 2026 was launched a couple weeks back. The programme aims to offer subsidised electric bikes and rickshaws to reduce carbon emissions and support affordable transportation. Like many others, I participated in the balloting process for this scheme and was fortunate to be selected in October. All verification requirements were completed promptly. Yet, despite fulfilling every condition, the process came to a halt when the banking stage was to commence. After December 2025, I received an email stating that the partner bank would either contact me or I should approach it directly. Upon visiting the designated bank, I was astonished to find that neither the branch staff nor the helpline had any knowledge of the scheme.

It is troubling that such a significant public initiative suffers from poor coordination between the executing authorities and financial institutions. Repeated attempts to seek clarification from the programme’s helpline have yielded no response, while the 1048 helpline has expressed inability to address the matter, citing the bank’s reluctance. This situation has caused unnecessary anxiety among selected applicants. The authorities concerned must look into the matter urgently and ensure that the scheme is implemented in letter and spirit.
