In the midst of the raging war in the Middle East, Pakistan’s role assumes great significance. Being a nuclear power, an integral part of the Muslim world and a geographically well-positioned nation, it needs to act wisely, ethically and in its own interest. The stance taken by Pakistan must also be guided by the founding principles of supporting justice, sovereignty and the sanctity of innocent lives. While the need for diplomatic balance is vital from a strategic perspective, the moral dimension is equally relevant.
Demanding a ceasefire, access for the innocent and the need for international norms is consistent with our values and international obligations. By adopting a balanced and principled stance, Pakistan can ensure its own interests while contributing to world efforts towards peace. In these uncertain and turbulent times, wisdom in foreign policy is no longer a luxury.
