Democracy subverted

The tensions between the US and Iran are frequently presented as a struggle for stability and democracy. The language of ‘restoring democracy’ is often used to justify intervention. However, public opinion surveys in the US have shown that many Americans do not support war with Iran. When the majority opposes conflict, yet aggressive policies continue, where does democracy truly exist? If democracy means rule by the people, then their voice should guide national decisions. Moreover, democracy cannot be imposed from outside. Even if Iran faces criticism for its political system, true democratic change must come from within its own society. History shows that external intervention in the name of democracy often leads to instability rather than freedom.
