The Higher Education Commission (HEC) has constituted a high-level committee to review the state of education and research in engineering and technology disciplines in higher education institutions across the country and propose measures for strengthening these programmes.
According to a notification issued by the HEC, the committee has been tasked with evaluating the existing framework of engineering and technology education and recommending reforms to enhance academic quality, research capacity and industry linkages.
Under the notification, the vice chancellor of the University of Engineering and Technology (UET), Lahore, Dr Shahid Munir, has been appointed as the convener of the committee. Other members include Dr Sarosh Hashmat Lodi, Dr Ehsanullah Kakar, Dr Samreen Hussain, Rector of GIK Institute of Engineering Sciences and Technology Dr Fazal Ahmad Khalid, Rector of the National University of Technology Islamabad Lt Gen (Retd) Moazzam Ejaz, Vice Chancellor of Shaheed Benazir Bhutto University Shaheed Benazirabad Dr Madad Ali Shah, Vice Chancellor of Quaid-e-Awam University of Engineering, Science and Technology Nawabshah Dr Saleem Raza Samo, and former Vice Chancellor of Punjab Tianjin University of Technology Lahore Dr Abdul Sattar Shakir.
The committee will also include the rector of the National University of Sciences and Technology or his nominee, vice chancellors or nominees from the NED University of Engineering and Technology Karachi, UET Peshawar, Mehran University of Engineering and Technology Jamshoro, Balochistan University of IT, Engineering and Management Sciences Quetta, Punjab Tianjin University of Technology Lahore, University of Technology Nowshera and Mirpur University of Science and Technology. In addition, the registrar of the Pakistan Engineering Council or his nominee will serve as a member, while the director general of the Quality Assurance Agency at the HEC will act as secretary of the committee.
