ISLAMABAD: The government has accorded a three-year extension in service to incumbent National Accountability Bureau (NAB) Chairman, Lt Gen (retd) Nazir Ahmad Butt, with an immediate effect. He was retiring after completion of his first tenure of three years on Thursday. The decision has been taken in view of the meritorious services of the general, who has turned around the performance of the bureau.

Highly placed sources told The News here on Thursday evening that Lt Gen (retd) Nazir Butt was appointed NAB chairman on March 5, 2023, through consensus between Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and then Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly, Raja Riaz Ahmad Khan, in accordance with constitutional provisions. The president accorded his assent late in the evening, and subsequently, the due notification was issued the same evening, the sources said.
