ISLAMABAD: Finland, which had announced the closure of its embassy in Islamabad, will cease its operations here in the upcoming summer. The mission will continue to function until the final date is announced.

The Northern European country reopened its embassy in 2022 after a ten-year closure, and now Helsinki has again announced its shutdown. Interestingly, its neighbouring country, Sweden, had already closed its embassy in Pakistan indefinitely three years ago in 2023, citing security situation as the reason.

Finnish embassy sources told The News here on Wednesday that the mission is being closed due to strategic and operational reasons. The embassy provides limited consular services, though visa and passport matters are often handled by other Finnish missions, such as the one in Abu Dhabi, the sources reminded.

Finland has also announced that it is closing down its embassies in Afghanistan and Myanmar as well, due to “operational and strategic reasons.”
