Sindh Labour Minister Saeed Ghani on Tuesday reiterated that safeguarding workers’ rights remains the government’s foremost responsibility and priority. Ghani, who also holds the portfolios of manpower and social security, said this during the 35th meeting of the Sindh Workers Welfare Board that he chaired as the chairman of the board’s governing body.
He announced the withdrawal of several controversial projects initiated in the past term, saying that they ran contrary to the interests of both workers and the institution. He ordered that transparent and thorough investigations be conducted into those schemes.
The meeting approved an increase in the workers’ death grant from Rs700,000 to Rs1 million, while the marriage grant was doubled from Rs200,000 to Rs400,000. To ensure transparency and effective oversight of all operations under the board, centralised committees have been constituted.
At the outset Ghani welcomed the governing body’s newly inducted members. The meeting reviewed the minutes and decisions of the previous board, revoking several earlier decisions. The meeting also approved the appointment of a public relations officer for the board.
Senior labour leader and governing body member Habibuddin Junaidi thanked the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) chief and the Sindh chief minister for once again entrusting the labour department to Ghani.
