139 roads to be rebuilt and solarised in city

Sindh Local Government Minister Syed Nasir Hussain Shah on Tuesday chaired a meeting on the Special Initiative for Road Rehabilitation (Karachi Programme), approving the restoration of 139 roads across various town municipal corporations in the city.

Estimated at Rs13 billion, the scheme will see extensive road rehabilitation in multiple areas. The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation has completed all the necessary preparations to initiate the project, according to a briefing by Barrister Murtaza Wahab, the city mayor.

Shah ordered that tenders be published in newspapers immediately to ensure prompt commencement of work and tangible improvement in Karachi’s infrastructure. He also ordered that the project not be limited to road carpeting alone but also include solarisation and installation of street lights to ensure long-term sustainability and public convenience.

He said that on the Pakistan Peoples Party chief’s directives the Sindh government is committed to transforming Karachi’s infrastructure, making the assurance that residents would witness a visible change this year.

He also said the LG department and municipal agencies are already in field and would go to every possible extent to deliver facilities to the public. Other government departments are also coordinating to provide administrative support so that all schemes are completed within the stipulated timelines, he added.
