ISLAMABAD: Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Dr Tariq Fazal Chaudhry hinted that the Islamabad may have its own legislative assembly under a new governance model being considered by the federal government.
While speaking at a panel discussion at Pakistan Governance Forum, organised by the Planning Division here on Thursday, Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Dr Triq Fazal Chaudhry said Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has constituted a committee headed by Minister for Planning, Development and Special Initiative Ahsan Iqbal and comprising Interior Minister, Minister for Parliamentary Affairs, Senator Rana Sanullah Khan, Minister for Climate Change Dr Musadik Malik and Islamabad administration and we have discussed in detail with regard the governance model of Islamabad in seven or eight meeting were held.
He said after these meetings, the committee had submitted its final report to the Prime Minister and according to recommendations of the committee, Islamabad will have its own legislative assembly after the approval from the Prime Minister where all the legislation regarding Islamabad will legislate.
He continued that legislative will be empowered in a pattern of the legislative bodies of the Capitals of the different countries to legislate the laws for the capital city. “It is our target and we are going to take a big step for the Islamabad and all the issue of Islamabad will be taken up in the legislative assembly.
During the question hour session, Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Dr Tariq Fazal Chaudhry said though we are not going declaring Islamabad as a Province as the federal area has its own sanctity and separate entity as the federal area did not come under any provincial assembly not any by-laws of any province apply there and it work on the model of legislative bodies in different capitals in the world. “The legislative assembly will work as governing body,” he said.
