THATTA: For the fourth time in two weeks, the bursting of the 72-inch-diameter main pipeline has suspended water supply to several areas of Karachi, resulting in the waste of thousands of gallons of water.
The incident occurred on Sunday following a power breakdown at the Dhabeji pumping station that caused the Karachi Water & Sewerage Corporation’s (KWSC) Line No. 5 to burst. As a result of this failure, four pumps at the pumping station also shut down.
According to sources, this is the fourth incident of a pipeline bursting in the past 15 days. Reports suggest that the frequent bursting of pipelines has become a routine matter, and there are allegations that substandard materials are being used in the repair work.
The KWSC administration has issued a statement on this crisis, confirming that repair work is under way. A spokesperson for the KWSC has made the assurance that the work is expected to be completed within 24 hours, following which water supply to the affected areas of the city would resume.
