Civic duty

It is high time we realised that the progress of a nation is not solely the responsibility of the state. As individuals, we carry an equal burden of care for the land we call home. During my daily commute to Islamabad for my studies, I am frequently disheartened by the lack of basic civic sense on our roads. From littering and blatant disregard for traffic rules to unnecessary honking and disruptive behaviour in public spaces, there is a visible decay in our social etiquette.

What has disturbed me most recently is the rising trend of spray-painting and vandalising of signboards in our capital. This mindless destruction of public property serves no purpose and directly sabotages the infrastructure meant to assist the public. Developing a basic civic sense is not a favour to the government; it is a prerequisite for a civilized and thriving society.
