Sindh police chief Javed Alam Odho on Monday chaired a review meeting on the status of police measures against extortion and street crime in Karachi at the Central Police Office.

The operations AIG told the meeting about police performance against extortion and street crime since January 1. The CIA Karachi DIG said that out of the 33 extortion complaints received, 13 were deemed genuine, adding that 12 of the cases have been resolved, while seven suspects have been arrested and three killed.

The city police chief said his department is in constant contact with business owners. He said that along with action on their complaints regarding extortion, they are also being informed about police progress. District officers have been directed to formulate a coordinated strategy to prevent street crime, he added.

IGP Odho ordered that police action against extortion and street crime be intensified exceptionally. Police action should be received with appreciation from business owners and the public, he said.

He also said zonal and district police chiefs should meet business owners from time to time to ensure that cases are registered on extortion complaints and take immediate action. Police measures should be effective in curbing the increase in street crime and violent incidents, he added, while general hold-ups and checking should be increased in view of the arrival of Ramazan. Odho also ordered that the District Police Shaheen Force be deployed for patrolling under a coordinated strategy, and that all officers prepare a contingency plan before Ramazan.
