SHANGLA: A coal miner from Shangla who lost his life in a tragic mining accident in Sindh was laid to rest in his native village on Friday, amid scenes of grief and mourning.
A resident of Lailai Dandai village in Shangla, Aftab Shah was killed while working deep underground in the Lakhra Coal Mines near Hyderabad.
According to local sources, Aftab Shah was busy with routine work inside the mine when a sudden accident occurred, leaving him trapped and fatally injured.
He could not survive the incident. His body was later shifted from Hyderabad to his ancestral village, where his funeral prayers were offered. A large number of relatives, fellow miners and local residents attended the funeral, while the entire area remained overshadowed by sorrow.
More than 60 percent of the population in Shangla depends directly or indirectly on coal mining for livelihood. Due to the absence of industries, factories and alternative employment opportunities, local residents - including teenagers as young as 13 and elderly men up to 50 years of age - are compelled to work thousands of feet underground in hazardous mining conditions.
