ISLAMABAD: The Chief Justice of Pakistan held a meeting on Monday with Mohamed Yahya, the United Nations Resident Coordinator in Pakistan, along with a delegation comprising representatives from the UNDP, UN Women, UNICEF, UNODC, and UNFPA.

During the meeting, a detailed exchange of views on reforms in Pakistan’s justice system, improvements in governance, accountability, and the restoration of public confidence in the rule of law took place.

The Chief Justice of Pakistan, Justice Yahya Afridi, emphasised the importance of easy access to justice, enhanced institutional performance, and a justice system that is responsive to citizens’ needs and inclusive. He made it clear that judicial reforms are closely linked to the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals, as a strong and credible justice system is the foundation of democratic governance. He appreciated the support of United Nations agencies in protecting human rights, promoting gender equality, child-friendly justice, and enhancing the capacity of judicial institutions in Pakistan.

During the meeting, both sides agreed to further expand cooperation in the future through technical assistance, judicial education and training, data-driven reform initiatives, and the exchange of international best practices. At the conclusion of the meeting, a commitment was reaffirmed to advance the process of judicial reforms through dialogue and cooperation, in accordance with Pakistan’s constitutional values and international commitments, according to a press release issued here.
