LAHORE: Group B of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 promises high drama as it unfolds exclusively in Sri Lanka, bringing together two former champions alongside rising challengers.

Hosts Sri Lanka, winners in 2014, will look to recapture past glory, while Australia, the 2021 champions, arrive as one of the tournament favourites. They are joined by Ireland, Oman, and Zimbabwe, each determined to make their mark on the global stage.

Australia enter the competition under the leadership of Mitchell Marsh, who famously starred in the 2021 final with a match-winning 77 against New Zealand. Despite their mixed record in recent editions, the Australians boast a powerful batting lineup featuring Travis Head, Glenn Maxwell, and Cameron Green, complemented by the spin duo of Adam Zampa and Cooper Connolly. Their opening clash against Ireland will be crucial as they aim to return to the knockout stages for the first time since their title-winning run.

Ireland, led by veteran Paul Stirling, bring experience and spirit, having featured in every World Cup since 2009. Their memorable victory over eventual champions England in 2022 remains a highlight, and with talents like Josh Little and young spinner Matthew Humphreys, they will be eyeing progression to the Super 8.

Oman make their fourth appearance after qualifying through the Asia & East Asia-Pacific pathway. Skipper Jatinder Singh will lead from the front, supported by vice-captain Vinayak Shukla. Oman’s bowling attack, spearheaded by Jiten Ramanandi, Sufyan Mehmood, and Nadeem Khan, could prove decisive. With veterans Aamir Khaleem (44) and Mohammad Nadeem (43), they also field the two oldest players in the tournament, adding experience to their youthful squad.

Sri Lanka, back on familiar turf, will rely on home advantage in Colombo and Kandy to reignite their fortunes. Captain Dasun Shanaka leads a potent bowling unit featuring Wanindu Hasaranga, Maheesha Pathirana, and Dushmantha Chameera, while batting hopes rest on Pathum Nissanka and the seasoned Kusal Mendis. After their disappointing exit in 2024, the hosts will be determined to deliver a strong campaign in front of their fans.

Zimbabwe return after missing the last edition, buoyed by the emergence of Brian Bennett, whose prolific form in the African Qualifier secured their place. Alongside stalwarts Sikandar Raza and Brendan Taylor, Bennett’s rise offers fresh hope for an upset. Having shocked Pakistan four years ago, Zimbabwe will target early momentum against Oman before facing Australia in a pivotal second fixture.
