A ceremony was organised at the Governor House on Sunday to address the grievances of the families of those killed in the Gul Plaza tragedy and the affected traders.

Addressing the ceremony, Sindh Governor Kamran Tessori said the fire at the Gul Plaza continued to spread, yet no timely and effective action was taken. Due to this grave negligence, precious human lives were lost.

He emphasised that merely providing financial compensation after such incidents was not enough as there must be an effective system in place to save lives. Unfortunately, he added, such a system was not functioning effectively in Karachi.

He stated that Karachi contributed nearly 70 per cent of the country’s tax revenue, yet this contribution was not reflected in the development and spending on the city. He urged Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, and Chief of Defence Forces and Chief of the Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir to take immediate decisions for Karachi, warning that the city was heading towards destruction and needed urgent measures.

He announced that he would personally visit the home of every deceased person of the fire incident and plots would be provided to the affected families of the Gul Plaza tragedy so that they would not be left alone in their grief.

Tessori said those responsible for the Gul Plaza tragedy must be held accountable, adding that the incompetence of local UC and town administrations also played a role in the incident.

Referring to the ongoing terrorism in Balochistan, the governor stated that Indian-sponsored elements were behind such acts and every anti-Pakistan attempt would be addressed in a decisive manner.

He said the Pakistan Army would continue its operations against hostile elements and no Pakistan-hostile actions by India or any other country would be tolerated. Concluding his address, the governor said he wanted to be a governor of the people’s hearts and had no desire for positions or titles.

MQM-Pakistan chief and Federal Minister Dr Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui, senior MQM-Pakistan leader Dr Farooq Sattar, head of Saylani Welfare Bashir Farooqi, JDC head Zafar Abbas, Zubair Motiwala and Javed Balwani also addressed the gathering.
