Court jails, fines couple for newborn’s murder

RAWALPINDI: Additional District and Sessions Judge Farhan Mudassar has sentenced two accused, including a woman, to 34 years in prison and a fine of Rs 80,000 for the murder of a newborn girl.

The Saddar Wah Cantt Police Station had registered a case under Section 302 of the Pakistan Penal Code on February 12, 2023, alleging that an unidentified man and a woman, in order to hide their crime, wrapped the newborn girl in a cloth and threw her in an empty plot near Darbar Karimi. She had injury marks on her head and body. She was shifted to the Taxila Hospital but could not survive. Later, the police arrested Zulfiqar and Areeba.

On completion of the trial on Thursday, the court sentenced the couple to 10/10 years in prison under the murder provisions, 5/5 years in prison under 496-b 2 and a fine of Rs 10,000 each, and 2/2 years in prison and a fine of Rs 30,000 each under Section 329.
