APURI: Heavy rainfall lashed the Shangla district after a prolonged dry spell and biting cold while light snowfall continued in the mountainous areas since the night between Sunday and Monday.

Following weeks of unusually harsh, dry winter conditions, rain and snowfall began late Sunday night and intensified into torrential rain on Monday. Light snowfall was recorded across most mountainous and upper parts of the district.

Over the past three weeks, the absence of rain and snow had led to an abnormal increase in cold intensity across the valley, with temperatures in several areas falling below freezing point.

The extended dry cold spell caused natural springs, waterfalls, and seasonal streams in various parts of Shangla to dry up, while low temperatures froze natural water sources, resulting in an acute shortage of drinking water for residents.

Reduced water levels in rivers and streams also severely affected the output of local micro-hydropower stations and traditional water mills across the district, forcing several power units to shut down.

This led to increased loadshedding and added to people’s hardship. With the onset of rain and snowfall, hopes have risen for an improvement in water levels and the restoration of electricity generation.

Since Sunday night, light snowfall has been reported in Shangla Top, Yakh Tangi Top, Shaheedi Sar Top, Kandao, Chakesar Top, Kara, and other high-altitude areas.Meanwhile, intermittent heavy rain continued throughout Monday in Alpuri and other areas, further lowering mercury. Reduced visibility in upper regions also disrupted traffic flow.

Due to persistent rainfall on Monday, markets and commercial centres in Alpuri, Chakesar, Puran, Bisham, and surrounding areas remained largely deserted with many residents staying indoors.

However, farmers and orchard owners welcomed the rain and snowfall, terming it as beneficial for crops, orchards, and natural water resources.According to the Meteorological Department, rain and snowfall in Shangla and adjoining areas are expected to continue for the next four to five days, with a further drop in temperatures likely.
