LAHORE: The Punjab Home Department has created a new senior post and reshuffled responsibilities at the top administrative level in an effort to strengthen governance, security oversight and internal monitoring.
According to a notification, a copy of which is available with The News, a new post of Special Secretary has been created in the Home Department with the approval of the Finance Department. As part of the restructuring, the existing post of Special Secretary (Home) has been re-designated as Special Secretary (Security & Reforms), while the newly created position will be known as Special Secretary (Development & Monitoring). The notification states that both officers will exercise administrative oversight, coordination, monitoring and performance evaluation within clearly defined areas of the Home Department. The move is aimed at improving focus, accountability and performance across key sectors dealing with law and order, internal security and institutional management. Under the new distribution of work, the Special Secretary (Security & Reforms) will be responsible for internal security, special initiatives, judicial matters, foreign nationals’ security and police-related affairs. These functions cover some of the most sensitive areas of provincial governance, particularly those linked to law enforcement and public safety.
The Special Secretary (Development & Monitoring) will oversee the Home wing, defence planning, monitoring and internal audit, as well as prisons. Officials say this arrangement is intended to strengthen development planning, ensure effective monitoring of projects and improve oversight of correctional institutions. Copies of the notification have been forwarded to senior officials, including the chief secretary, the principal secretary to the chief minister, the secretary services and all additional and deputy secretaries of the Home Department.
The restructuring reflects the provincial government’s broader effort to streamline administration within the Home Department by separating security-focused responsibilities from development, monitoring and audit functions, allowing senior officers to concentrate on clearly defined priorities.
