Islamabad:The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has dismissed the forecast of snowfall in the country’s plain areas as speculative and unfounded.
According to experts at the NDMA’s National Emergencies Operations Centre, a normal increase in cold intensity is expected during the last fifteen days of January. As a result, snowfall is likely only in the mountainous regions.
From January 18 onwards, a westerly weather system entering the country is expected to bring snowfall to upper parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Azad Jammu and Kashmir. The system is also likely to cause rainfall in several areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, western Balochistan, and the Potohar region.
The NDMA said that for the next three to four days, most parts of the country are expected to experience dry and cold weather, leading to a further, seasonally normal drop in temperatures.
During the prevailing weather conditions, an intensified cold wave and increased fog density are also expected in the plains of Punjab and Sindh. In addition, southward-moving Siberian winds may cause a further decline in temperatures, resulting in a severe cold wave in northern parts of the country.The NDMA stated that it is issuing timely advisories and necessary instructions to all relevant departments in view of potential risks and the evolving weather situation.
