ABBOTTABAD: Member Provincial Assembly (MPA) Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Amina Sardar has condemned the forcible removal of a Muslim woman’s veil in India. She described it as a serious violation of personal dignity, religious freedom and the foundational principles of secularism.
Amina Sardar stated that clothing in any society was not merely a means of covering the body but a reflection of culture, identity, and intellectual freedom. She emphasized that in civilized and democratic societies, an individual’s choice of attire falls strictly within the private domain and must be respected.
“The responsibility of the state is not to dictate the appearance of its citizens, but to safeguard their right to live with dignity and in accordance with their identity,” she said.Explaining the concept of secularism, the MPA noted that its core principle lied in the equal treatment of all citizens, without discrimination or preference for any religion, culture, or lifestyle.
She stressed that secularism cannot be measured by constitutional declarations alone but must be reflected in practical conduct. “When actions contradict these values, secularism itself becomes questionable,” she observed. In this context, Amina Sardar expressed grave concern over a recent incident in Patna, the capital of the Indian state of Bihar.
