A new bloc

The paralysis of Saarc has long deprived South Asia of meaningful regional cooperation. Now, a bold new initiative is taking shape: Pakistan is quietly building an economic and connectivity bloc outside of Indian influence with China and Bangladesh. With Bangladesh’s post-Hasina government showing clear openness to this framework, the groundwork for a genuine alternative to Saarc is finally emerging. China’s inclusion changes everything. Its financial muscle, infrastructure expertise and Belt and Road vision can deliver the rapid, visible results that Saarc never could. The June Kunming meeting between China, Pakistan and Bangladesh was the first brick in a new regional architecture. If these three core members deepen their partnership, the gravitational pull will be strong. Afghanistan, desperate for reconstruction funds, is a natural fit. Iran, eager to expand eastward trade routes, has every incentive to join. Central Asian republics (Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan) already tied to China through energy pipelines and the SCO, would find southward access through this bloc highly attractive.

Far from being a fantasy, this grouping has a realistic chance of rapid expansion. It offers what Saarc never did: decisive leadership and tangible projects. South Asia’s smaller states may soon face a simple choice: remain tethered to a stalled forum or board a moving train.
