LAHORE:Lahore High Court Chief Justice Aalia Neelum Thursday disposed of the petition challenging the amendments to the Motor Vehicle Ordinance after the petitioner sought to withdraw it.

The court remarked that fines are higher so that people refrain from violations; across the world, heavy penalties are imposed for traffic offences. Laws are made to improve society, and legislation is necessary to make citizens responsible. The Chief Justice added that even parents do not act responsibly, adding that, in her own home, both adults and children have received challans.

According to the police, five thousand underage drivers have been injured or killed in accidents caused by one-way violations. ‘The government has enacted the law; it must be implemented. Instead of following the law, you have come here to have it scrapped. Children’s safety is extremely important. We need to become a law-abiding society.’

She further remarked that in Dubai, traffic violations can result in fines of up to 100,000 dirhams. ‘Hit-and-run cases in neighbourhoods are very common. Children’s feet don’t even reach the ground, yet they are given motorcycles. The government has already said that the first violation will result in a warning fine, and the second violation will lead to legal action.’
