The commercial product of any steel mill using iron ore and other raw materials is usually pig iron. Steel is then produced from pig iron in converters. The closure of Pakistan Steel Mills has not only resulted in the decline of primary grade steel, but has also left foundries deprived of pig iron. This material is often used in production of high quality castings for various industrial sectors. Foundry owners are now forced to import pig iron at higher rates.
Use of indigenous raw materials is a viable solution for steel and pig iron production, locally benefitting foundries and the steel sector of the country. This way, in addition to local usage of steel mill products there is great potential for export. This will provide a much-needed boost to the economy.
