Islamabad: High Commissioner of Canada Tarik Ali Khan Tuesday reaffirmed his country’s commitment to strengthening bilateral relations, particularly in expanding trade opportunities in the agriculture and food sectors.

During a meeting with Minister for Climate Change Dr Musadik Malik here, the high commissioner appreciated the ministry’s efforts to improve regulatory mechanisms and expressed Canada’s continued support for collaborative initiatives with Pakistan.

The meeting focused on various aspects of the trade of GM Canola between the two countries, particularly the limitations associated with Harmonised System codes and the need for greater clarity and efficiency in related procedures.

Secretary Climate Change Aisha Moriani was also present in the meeting. The minister assured the high commissioner that his ministry remained committed to minimising procedural delays and ensuring that any new policies or amendments to existing frameworks are aimed at streamlining processes and facilitating both importers and exporters.

He also said that the ministry was actively upgrading its digital dashboard to improve transparency, efficiency and ease of doing business for all relevant stakeholders. The discussion also touched upon enhancing institutional capacity within the climate change ministry to better manage technical and regulatory aspects of climate-linked trade, agricultural commodities and biosafety-related issues. Both sides agreed to maintain close coordination and work together to promote sustainable, transparent and mutually beneficial trade practices.
