ISLAMABAD: Police successfully foiled a terrorist attack at a routine checkpoint Monday morning in the jurisdiction of the Fruit and Vegetable Market (Sabzi Mandi), resulting in the death of one assailant and the arrest of two others.
The incident unfolded early morning when a team of police officers, deployed for routine checking, was suddenly ambushed by five gunmen riding three motorcycles. The assailants, later identified by police sources as Afghan nationals, opened indiscriminate fire with sophisticated weapons upon reaching the police checkpoint.
Police officials confirmed that the officers, equipped with protective gear and bulletproof vests, remained unharmed during the encounter. During the exchange, two attackers were critically injured and later shifted to a hospital, where one succumbed to his wounds.
Police stated that the two assailants were wounded by the firing of their own accomplices. During the encounter, police also managed to arrest two of the attackers. A search operation is currently underway to track down the remaining accomplices who fled the scene.
Further investigation revealed a significant development. The deceased assailant was identified as being involved in the assassination of Islamabad Police’s martyred ASI Ali Akbar. Authorities also recovered the official pistol of the martyred ASI Ali Akbar from the deceased suspect.
Police seized weapons and impounded two motorcycles from the suspects. One of the recovered motorcycles was confirmed to have been snatched from the jurisdiction of the Shams Colony Police Station.
The Islamabad Police spokesperson praised the courage and readiness of the officers, whose swift and professional response prevented potential casualties and led to the arrest and identification of the suspects.
