ISLAMABAD: Dr Ali Larijani, Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, who is arriving on two-day Pakistan visit with officials, in a welcome statement on Monday said that the visit “will play a crucial role in further solidifying Pakistan-Iran historical and deep rooted ties.”

Interestingly, Larijani’s visit comes at a time when there is an ongoing visit by Saudi Armed Forces General Fayyadn Bin Hameed Al Rowaili who held discussions with Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Field Marshal Asim Munir and Chief of General Staff (CGS) at the GHQ.

While there was no formal statement from the Foreign Office, the news of Larijani was broken from Tehran by the Iranian secretary himself and the Pakistan’s Ambassador to Iran Muhammad Mudassir Tipu on X.

Dr Larijani stated few hours before his arrival said that, “I will be departing today for a visit to Pakistan, which is our friend and brotherly country in the region. “The Iranian people will never forget that in the 12-day war imposed on Iran by America and the Zionist regime, the Pakistani nation stood alongside the Iranian nation. Iran and Pakistan are two important and effective countries for sustainable security in the region, and we always focus on fraternal relations with the countries of the region,” he added.

While the Foreign Office is quiet on the officials that Larijani will meet, some reports from Tehran indicate that the Iranian dignitary will meet with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, President Asif Ali Zardari and Field Marshal Asim Munir.

Earlier, Pakistan’s ambassador in Tehran tweeted that Ali Larijani is undertaking a visit to Pakistan on Monday. “The visit is part of extensive interactions between leaderships of two countries to reinforce our ties. The visit will play a crucial role in further solidifying Pakistan-Iran historical and deep-rooted ties.”

Earlier Ambassador Mudassir before announcing the visit of the Iranian official had outlined what he said were promising developments between the two countries, focusing on bilateral trade.

“I want to share promising developments on leveraging Pakistan-Iran trade potential, being discussed in our bilateral interactions:

(a) Both sides are speeding up implementation of Pakistan-Iran FTA.

(b) Barter mechanism will soon be operationalised between both countries.
