clutches
There’s something effortlessly chic about carrying a clutch. Unlike oversized totes or everyday handbags, a clutch makes you feel sleek and confident. A well-chosen clutch can add a splash of sophistication to a simple dress or complete a glamorous look for special occasions. No wonder clutches remain a timeless favourite among fashionistas.
A clutch bag is not just another accessory; it is a statement piece that can elevate any outfit. Whether it’s brunch with the girls, a big meeting at work, or a glamorous evening out, clutches have the rare power to adapt and elevate. Embellished, sparkling clutches pair beautifully with evening attires.
When it comes to our local brands, ‘Sitarey by Mehnaz’ resonates with fine craftsmanship and glittering clutches. Mehnaz Karamat is an entrepreneur who works with female artisans in a bid to uplift them economically and socially. You! What inspired you to start ‘Sitarey by Mehnaz’, and how did your journey as an entrepreneur begin?
Mehnaz Karamat: My entrepreneurial journey began in 2019 with a simple idea that sparked a passion. The concept was to empower our rural female artisans and showcase their craftsmanship to the world. It wasn’t easy, but the drive to turn my vision into reality kept me going.
You! Why did you choose the name ‘Sitarey’?
MK: I dedicated the name ‘Sitarey’ to all the shining female artisans whose incredible work spreads radiance and brightness.
You! What makes Sitarey clutches different from other designer or mass-produced handbags in the market?
MK: We offer artistic, handcrafted luxury bags at an affordable price. Each piece is carefully made with love and attention to detail, making them truly one of a kind. Our bags are fabric-based and feature traditional beads, sequins and gota work – ranging from motif clutches and potlis to contemporary-shaped bags with abstract and floral designs.
You! What is your modus operandi? How do you select and collaborate with the female artisans who create your products?
MK: We are all about empowering women through skill development. We work with trained female artisans who are provided with material and work in the comfort of their own homes. We also collaborate with local master artisans who train others in traditional techniques like beadwork and embroidery. Each piece tells a story of tradition, culture and empowerment. Each purchase supports the community of artisans.
You! How do you ensure that working from home provides both financial empowerment and safety for the women involved?
MK: We prioritise fair compensation and safe working conditions for our artisans. Since they work from home, we ensure timely payments through our middle women on our team.
You! How do you balance traditional craftsmanship with contemporary fashion trends in your collections?
MK: We strike a balance by incorporating traditional techniques like phulkari or gota work into modern designs, fabrics and silhouettes. It’s about respecting heritage while making pieces that resonate with contemporary fashion. Our artisans work with delicate beads and iridescent sequins to embellish these clutches.
You! As a female entrepreneur with a social impact focus, what has been your biggest learning so far?
MK: As a socially-focused entrepreneur, my biggest learning has been witnessing the resilience and creativity of our artisans.
You! What role does sustainability play in your brand, especially in the context of handmade fashion?
MK: Handmade fashion naturally lends itself to sustainability – slower production, less waste and eco-friendly practices. We prioritise natural fabrics, locally sourced materials and zero-waste techniques. Plus, by supporting artisans, we are promoting conscious consumption.
You! What were some of the biggest challenges you faced in establishing a social-impact brand in Pakistan?
MK: One of the biggest challenges is that the designs we create are copied. Although we have copyrights for our designs, they are not effectively enforced.
You! What do you like most about your work?
MK: I love seeing the transformation – from a simple piece of fabric to a stunning story-filled clutch. Working with talented artisans, preserving our cultural heritage and knowing that each piece empowers a woman makes every step worthwhile.
You! What advice would you give to women looking to start a socially-conscious business?
MK: Identify a cause you are passionate about, understand the community you want to impact and start small but think big. Collaborate, be patient and don’t be afraid to seek help.
You! What is the most important relationship lesson you have learnt so far?
MK: The most important lesson is that relationships – personal or professional – thrive on empathy, communication and mutual respect.
You! How do you keep a balance between family life and work?
MK: It is about setting clear boundaries and prioritising time with loved ones. My family is super supportive and I try to involve them in my work whenever possible. Plus, having a solid team allows me to focus on both family and business.
You! How do you unwind?
MK: The most enjoyable time for me is when I am with my precious family and friends.
You! What is your most treasured possession?
MK: My family.
You! Your philosophy of life?
MK: If you see someone without a smile, give them one of yours.
You! How do you see ‘Sitarey by Mehnaz’ evolving over the next 5 years? Are there any new product lines or collaborations you are planning to explore?
MK: ‘Sitarey by Mehnaz’ is likely to continue blending traditional craftsmanship with contemporary fashion trends. Over the next five years, we plan to expand the brand by introducing new product lines. As for collaborations, we may explore partnerships with local artisans or international designers to create unique, limited-edition pieces that showcase Pakistani craftsmanship on a global platform.
