FESTIVE FLICKS

Eid usually comes with a long list of traditions. Families gather for lunch, homes fill with the smell of sheer khurma, relatives drop by for eidi exchanges and evenings often turn into casual outings. For many people, that outing includes a trip to the cinema. Over the years, Eid has remained one of the most important windows for film releases, when producers hope packed theatres and festive moods will translate into strong box office numbers. This year too, a handful of local productions are lining up for an Eid ul Fitr release, offering audiences a mix of action, crime and drama.

Among the most anticipated titles is ‘Bullah’, a Punjabi-language action drama directed by Shoaib Khan. The film stars Shaan Shahid in the lead role, alongside Mona Liza (Sara Loren) and Saleem Sheikh, with supporting performances from Naeema Butt, Adnan Butt, Ali Josh and Maham Mirza. Written by veteran screenwriter Nasir Adeeb, the story revolves around a man who rises against injustice and oppressive forces, drawing inspiration from the spiritual legacy associated with the name ‘Bullah.’ The narrative blends action with themes of faith, dignity and resistance, set against a cultural backdrop rooted in Punjab. The film also marks the on-screen reunion of Shaan Shahid and Saleem Sheikh after nearly three decades, which has already created buzz among fans. Scheduled for a nationwide theatrical release, the film positions itself as a comeback vehicle for Shaan and promises large-scale action along with emotional depth.

Another major commercial entry arriving this Eid is ‘Aag Lagay Basti Mein’, directed by Bilal Atif Khan. The film stars Fahad Mustafa and Mahira Khan in lead roles, with Javed Sheikh, Tabish Hashmi and Salahuddin Tunio also part of the cast. The crime-comedy follows a married couple who turn to crime in hopes of improving their financial situation, only to find themselves pulled into a chain of chaotic and unintended consequences. Set against the backdrop of Karachi, the film explores greed, moral compromise and the ripple effects of bad decisions, all while maintaining a darkly humorous tone. The project also carries added interest because it reunites Fahad Mustafa and Mahira Khan after their earlier film collaboration. With sharp dialogue, fast-paced storytelling and a popular star pairing, the film aims to deliver an entertaining mix of humour and suspense.

Completing the Eid lineup is ‘Delhi Gate’, directed by Nadeem Cheema. The film features Yasser Khan, Shamoon Abbasi, Suzain Fatima, Jawed Sheikh and Shafqat Cheema among its ensemble cast. Set around Lahore’s historic Walled City, the story follows a struggling journalist and a software engineer who unexpectedly cross paths near the iconic Delhi Gate. After witnessing a shocking event, they become entangled in a conspiracy that links powerful figures to a dangerous underground network. Combining elements of romance, action and suspense, the film uses the cultural setting of old Lahore to frame a story of crime, power and survival. Its mix of veteran performers and newer faces may appeal to viewers who enjoy traditional drama blended with thriller elements.

With action, crime comedy and suspense all arriving together, this year’s Eid releases aim to give cinemagoers multiple reasons to step out after the festive meals and family gatherings.
