Dear Ed,
In the issue of 14 November, the article ‘The survivor’ highlighted the trauma faced by a very large number of Karachiites. My mother stopped driving after she was mugged at a signal in broad daylight while the traffic police constable simply looked on. I sincerely hope that there is a crackdown on these muggers, especially after the installation of the new traffic cameras. I believe that if the police genuinely wish to act, they can stop or at least curtail these crimes that are carried out with such blatant impunity. However, since there is no will, there seems to be no way to prevent them. Thank you for highlighting the horror we continue to live with as the denizens of Karachi.

Hello Ed,
I am a regular reader, and I love poems that are published every week in the ‘Poets’ Corner’ section. Among my favourite poets of the Us family are Amna Ameer and Abid Agha. Their poetry is totally different but both write so beautifully! While Amna has been writing for a while now, Abid is comparatively newer, but what a great addition he is to ‘Poets’ Corner’! I also miss the poetry writing competitions that you used to hold, and hope to see one in the near future.

Hi Ed,
The cover story, ‘Diabetes Mellitus, a silent threat’ by Shahadi Ghazal was an eye-opener. I believe that if parents monitor what their children are eating, they can make a difference, although it is unfortunate that many parents also enjoy fast food and consume it themselves, which makes it harder for them to guide their children. I am allowed one fast food meal and one soda a week. Although I am an A Level student and could easily go behind my parents’ backs when I am at school, I do not do so because my parents sat with me and explained why these limits matter. As a family, we eat out on Saturdays and enjoy healthy, home-cooked food for the rest of the week. I apologise if I am boring you, readers, but my point is that parents and teachers can make a difference if they commit themselves to it.
