ISLAMABAD: Judicial Magistrate Ahmed Shehzad Gondal on Thursday extended the physical remand of five accused arrested in a case of illegal purchase and sale of human organs in the federal capital to one day.
FIA produced the accused in the court and sought extension in their physical remand to another seven days. The investigating officer said the accused were sending a consignment of placenta, containing 30 cartons, to Vietnam. The placenta, stopped at the airport, weighed around 580 kilograms. However, the court extended the physical remand to one day.
The FIA and HOTA team recently conducted an operation in Islamabad and arrested five people, including Chinese nationals, for their involvement in the sale of human organs. Stocks of fresh, dried and processed placenta were seized. The accused used to collect placentas from hospitals in Peshawar, Rawalpindi and Lahore, and export them as sheep organs.
In another case, Additional District and Sessions Judge Muhammad Ali Warraich sought arguments from the parties on the handover of a newborn held by the PIMS. According to the petition filed by the newborn baby’s grandmother Nasreen Bibi, Mehnaz Bibi gave birth to the baby at PIMS but it was not handed over to the mother after birth.
Despite completing all legal proceedings, the GI department illegally detained the newborn. The head nurse demanded Rs500,000 from the family in exchange for the baby’s handover. The affected family requested the court for immediate handover of the newborn to the mother. The court directed the PIMS administration to submit a report on the matter and the federal police to visit PIMS and submit a report. The court sought arguments from the parties and adjourned the hearing until Friday (today).
