ISLAMABAD: The Council of Islamic Ideology (CII) has endorsed the Federal Shariat Court’s judgment restoring punishment for attempted suicide, describing the ruling as an important step towards the protection of human life.
The decision was taken during a meeting of the council chaired by its Chairman, Allama Dr. Muhammad Raghib Hussain Naeemi. The council also reiterated its earlier recommendations regarding the Islamabad High Court’s ruling on marital assets, stating that the judgment was inconsistent with Islamic injunctions.
The meeting reviewed in detail the Family Courts (Amendment) Bill, 2026, particularly the provisions relating to child maintenance and clarified the Islamic principles governing financial support for children. Keeping medical necessity in view, the council declared that the donation and transplantation of the human cornea are permissible under the Islamic law, subject to specific conditions and safeguards.
The council also supported the federal government’s proposed legislation to ban plastic shopping bags, describing it as a commendable initiative for environmental protection. It further urged the provincial governments to enact similar legislation to strengthen environmental conservation efforts across the country.
The participants highly appreciated Pakistan’s sincere diplomatic efforts in facilitating the ceasefire between the United States and Iran and commended the country’s role in promoting regional peace. The council also called for the immediate reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, emphasising that uninterrupted maritime trade is essential for stabilising the global economy and easing worldwide inflation and shortages of essential resources.
Expressing satisfaction over the peaceful observance of the first ten days of Muharram-ul-Haram, the council praised the efforts of the security forces, the National Peace Committee, provincial peace committees, and interfaith and inter-sect harmony committees for maintaining law and order throughout the
country. The meeting was attended by Hafiz Tahir Mahmood Ashrafi, Hafiz Muhammad Amjad, Allama Iftikhar Hussain Naqvi, Dr. Mufti Intikhab Ahmad, Mufti Muhammad Zubair, Pir Hassan Haseeb-ur-Rehman, Rana Shafiq Pasruri, Syed Atiq-ur-Rehman, Allama Yousaf Awan, and Shams-ur-Rehman Mashhadi, among other members.
