KARACHI: The rupee ended broadly unchanged against the dollar in the interbank market on Friday.The rupee changed at 278.25 per dollar, compared with 278.26 in the previous session.
In the open market, the rupee traded at 279.54 against the dollar, barely changed from 279.55 on Thursday.Dealers said the local currency remained stable due to a continued rise in foreign exchange reserves.
Pakistan’s foreign exchange reserves held by the central bank rose by $26 million to $17.221 billion as of June 12.The SBP expects to meet its target of $18 billion in foreign exchange reserves for the outgoing fiscal year, as the official inflows provided critical support in meeting external obligations, facilitating ongoing FX purchases and buildup in reserves.
Pakistan’s current account balance swung to a surplus in May largely because of strong remittances. The current account surplus stood at $459 million in May compared to a deficit of $276 million in the previous month. In May 2025, the current account was in a deficit of $44 million. The surplus shrank to $255 million in 11 months from July to May from $1.62 billion a year earlier.
