A 19-year-old man was shot dead by armed robbers after allegedly resisting a street crime incident in Shah Latif Town on Wednesday.

According to police, the incident occurred in Abdullah Goth, within the jurisdiction of Shah Latif Town police station, where unidentified armed men riding a motorcycle opened fire, killing the young man.

The victim was taken to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC), where he was identified as Syed Rizwan, son of Nasir Abbas. He was a resident of Abdullah Goth and originally hailed from Bahawalpur. Rizwan was employed at Qasim Textile Mills on the National Highway.

Speaking at the hospital, the victim’s brother, Sultan, said that he, Rizwan, and their brother-in-law had left home on foot at around 7am for work. Sultan and his brother-in-law were walking ahead while Rizwan was following behind.

He said that three armed men riding a motorcycle intercepted them and snatched their mobile phones at gunpoint. According to Sultan, Rizwan witnessed the robbery and threw a stone at the suspects. Enraged by the act, the robbers allegedly opened fire before fleeing the scene.

Rizwan was struck in the chest and died on the spot. The victim’s brother further stated that Rizwan’s mobile phone had fallen to the ground during the commotion and was later picked up by an unidentified person who fled the scene.

The police said investigators collected evidence from the crime scene and recovered four spent bullet casings. Initial findings indicated that Rizwan suffered a single gunshot wound to the chest, which proved fatal.

Law enforcement officials had launched a search operation to trace and arrest the suspects involved in the killing.
