Rs4.30bn for energy sector projects

LAHORE:The Punjab government has earmarked Rs4.30 billion for projects in the energy sector that emphasise renewable energy, solarisation, and enhancements in efficiency.

This budget reflects a move towards clean energy and a reduction in reliance on the national grid. The Renewable Energy Development Sector Investment Programme, known as REDSIP, has been allocated Rs900 million. This initiative aims to facilitate substantial investments in renewable energy and encourage private sector involvement.

Additionally, the CM Free Solar Panel Scheme has also received Rs900 million. This programme will provide households with free solar panels, helping to lower electricity expenses and offer relief to consumers burdened by high power costs.

To showcase green infrastructure, Rs417 million designated for the Design and Construction of a Net Zero Energy Building. This facility will produce as much energy as it consumes and will act as a prototype for future government initiatives. The solarisation of District and Sessions Courts, along with High Court Benches, has been allocated Rs246 million. This transition to solar power will ensure continuous operations and alleviate pressure on the grid. Furthermore, Rs200 million has been set aside for the Installation of Solar Energy Systems in Government Buildings, which will include rooftop solar installations on offices and departments to reduce government electricity expenses. An additional Rs200 million has been reserved for the Clearance of Pending Liabilities to address outstanding payments from previous energy projects and bolster contractor confidence.
