The reported agreement between the US and Iran to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) marks a potentially transformative moment in a long and volatile conflict. While much of the world’s attention has remained fixed on the tensions themselves, insufficient recognition has been given to the steady and effective diplomacy that made this breakthrough possible. At the heart of these efforts stands Pakistan – calmly, consistently and constructively facilitating dialogue where others saw only deadlock. Pakistan’s approach stands out as a reminder that dialogue, when pursued sincerely, still works. It also reinforces Pakistan’s growing stature as a responsible regional actor capable of contributing meaningfully to global peace initiatives.

However, past experiences with ceasefires and provisional agreements remind us that progress can quickly unravel if trust is not sustained. Equally concerning are Israel’s continued military actions in Lebanon. Its reluctance to withdraw forces risks undermining broader regional stability. If the US is sincere in its pursuit of peace with Iran, it must also ensure that its allies align with this objective. Pakistan’s role, therefore, does not end with the signing of the MOU. The coming weeks will require continued diplomatic vigilance. This is both a challenge and an opportunity for Pakistan to further consolidate its position as a trusted mediator.
