Karachi’s public transport system remains hazardous for women. Issues such as overcrowding, harassment and the lack of dedicated seating often force female students and professionals to avoid buses or spend more on ride-hailing services. Although the Pink Bus Service is a positive step, its limited routes are insufficient. Additionally, poor lighting and unaddressed misconduct at bus stops continue to pose serious problems.
I urge the Sindh Transport Department to install CCTV cameras at bus stops, hire female conductors, expand women-only bus services to all major routes, and impose strict penalties for harassment. Safe commuting is a basic right and vital to the city’s advancement.
