PARACHINAR: A passerby was killed and three police personnel were injured when unidentified armed men attacked a police checkpost in the Mir Bagh area of central Kurram on Sunday.

Police officials said the attackers targeted the police checkpost with heavy and automatic weapons, opening fire from several directions. The assault resulted in the death of a civilian passerby at the scene, while three policemen sustained injuries.

The police personnel stationed at the checkpost immediately returned the fire, leading to an exchange of gunfire in the area. The condition of the injured cop was not immediately known.

Following announcements from local mosques, the residents began efforts to restore calm and prevent further escalation by carrying white flags and calling for an immediate ceasefire.

Local sources said incidents of this nature have been increasing in the central Kurram in recent months, raising concerns among residents about the deteriorating security situation in the region. Eyewitnesses reported that security forces subsequently launched an operation against suspected militant hideouts and used artillery fire to target the positions of the attackers in the surrounding area.

Authorities have not yet identified the attackers and an investigation into the incident is underway.
