Senior trustee of Ummah Welfare Trust, United Kingdom, Maulana Muhammad on Sunday underscored the need for sustainable welfare initiatives in Pakistan, saying that enabling people to earn a livelihood was among the most effective ways to reduce poverty and improve living standards.

Speaking at a ceremony held at the trust’s zonal office in Clifton, he said charitable organisations had a crucial role to play in supporting vulnerable families and helping them achieve economic self-reliance.

“Providing opportunities for dignified employment is a long-term solution that benefits not only individuals but entire communities,” he said. The ceremony marked the launch of the first phase of Ummah Welfare Trust Pakistan’s Income Generation Programme 2026, under which 30 auto-rickshaws and 35 motorcycles were distributed free of charge among 65 unemployed and deserving individuals.

The beneficiaries were handed over vehicle keys to help them establish sustainable sources of income and support their families through self-employment. Sindh Chief Minister’s Adviser Najmi Alam, MPA Yousuf Baloch, Ummah Welfare Trust Pakistan Chairman Maulana Muhammad Idris, Vice Chairman Haji Abdul Razzaq Baili, Shah Nawaz Khan, religious scholar Maulana Manzoor Mengal and others also spoke at the event. They said Pakistan continued to face economic challenges, making income-generating initiatives increasingly important for low-income households. They stressed that welfare efforts should focus not only on immediate relief but also on creating long-term economic opportunities for disadvantaged segments of society.
