ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Judicial Council (SJC) on Thursday, in a demonstration of institutional accountability and transparency, decided to take up matters concerning some of its own members.
The council considered ten matters in accordance with Article 209 of the Constitution and disposed of the business on the agenda.
A meeting of the Supreme Judicial Council was held here at the Conference Room of the Supreme Court of Pakistan, Islamabad, under the chairmanship of Justice Yahya Afridi, Chief Justice of Pakistan and chairperson of the SJC.
The meeting was attended by Federal Constitutional Court Chief Justice Aminuddin Khan, Supreme Court judges including Justice Munib Akhtar, Justice Jamal Khan Mandokhail, FCC Justice Syed Hasan Azhar Rizvi, Lahore High Court Chief Justice Ms Aalia Neelum, while Peshawar High Court, Chief Justice S M Attique Shah attended the meeting as a substituted member.
The SJC decided to make certain amendments to the Code of Conduct for Judges. The council also took up the proposed draft Rules Regulating Procedure and Conduct of Business of the Council. However, the matter was deferred for further deliberation.
“In a notable demonstration of institutional accountability and transparency, the Council decided to take up matters concerning some of its own members and accordingly, meetings were held with varying compositions in accordance with the relevant constitutional provisions,” said a press release issued here. The council considered 10 matters in accordance with Article 209 of the Constitution and disposed of the business on the agenda.
It was further stated that the meeting of the reconstituted SJC was attended by Supreme Court judges Justice Muhammad Ali Mazhar, Justice Ayesha A Malik; FCC judges Justice Aamer Farooq and Justice Ali Baqar Najafi as substituted members.
Meanwhile, a meeting of the Judicial Commission of Pakistan (JCP) was also held on Thursday in the Supreme Court.
During the meeting, the JCP took up the following agenda items: Interviews of Judges Appointment Rules; the Judicial Commission of Pakistan (Judicial Performance Evaluation of High Court Judges) Rules, 2026; and amendments to the Judicial Commission of Pakistan (Appointment of Judges) Rules, 2024; as well as the criterion for nominating judges to Constitutional Benches, as referred back by the committee for decision by the commission.
The commission decided that all the items would be placed before a JCP meeting which would include the commissions of all high courts, to be held next week.
