Police have arrested a man accused of torturing his 18-year-old wife to death in a suspected case of domestic violence linked to dowry demands.
According to investigators, the suspect, identified as Shehryar alias Shari, was arrested by Surjani Town police in connection with the death of his wife, Misbah, who succumbed to her injuries on May 9.
Police said the alleged assault took place on May 7 at the couple’s residence in Khokhrapar, Malir, where Misbah was reportedly subjected to severe physical abuse by her husband. Despite her injuries, she managed to reach her mother’s home in Surjani Town.
The victim was initially treated at a private hospital and later taken home. However, her condition worsened and she died during the night between May 8 and May 9. Following her death, a murder case was registered at Surjani Town police station on the complaint of her mother, Shahnaz, wife of Muhammad Asif. The FIR names Shehryar Butt, the victim’s husband, as the main suspect.
According to the complainant, Misbah had married Shehryar of her own choice on March 19. However, shortly after the marriage, he allegedly began subjecting her to physical abuse.
The victim’s mother alleged that the accused frequently changed residences and was living in Khokhrapar at the time of the incident. She further claimed that he repeatedly threatened the family and demanded a new motorcycle and other dowry items.
The family also alleged that they learned after the marriage that Misbah was Shehryar’s fourth wife. According to the FIR, an unidentified woman from Malir contacted the family on the morning of May 7 and informed them that Misbah had been injured. The woman reportedly allowed Misbah to speak with her relatives over the phone.
During the conversation, Misbah allegedly told her family that her husband had brutally beaten and tortured her before throwing her out of the house. She reportedly said she had sustained a head injury along with multiple internal and external injuries.
The complaint states that Misbah further alleged that her husband had applied leaves and salt to her head wound before abandoning her. The unidentified woman later arranged an online taxi and sent her to Surjani Town, where her family received her.
According to the complainant, Misbah also alleged that her husband attacked her with a knife during the assault. The victim’s family further claimed that the accused continued to issue threats over the phone and had previously visited their home, where he allegedly created disturbances and engaged in arguments.
After the case was registered, police launched an investigation and arrested the suspect. Investigators said he had gone into hiding following the incident but was later traced and taken into custody.
Police officials said further interrogation is underway as investigators continue collecting evidence and recording statements in the case. The incident has once again drawn attention to the issue of domestic violence and alleged dowry-related abuse, prompting calls for strict action against those responsible for such crimes.
