LAHORE: The Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) has sought the intervention of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif over growing concerns within the business community regarding the enforcement activities of the Punjab Enforcement and Regulatory Authority (Pera), urging the government to ensure transparency, accountability and the protection of legitimate businesses.
The demand was made during a press conference at the Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry on Wednesday.LCCI President Faheemur Rehman Saigol appreciated the business-friendly initiatives and reform measures introduced by the chief minister to promote economic development, attract investment and improve governance. However, he said serious concerns have been raised by traders and market representatives regarding certain Pera enforcement practices, which are creating anxiety among business owners.
He said the chamber fully supports rule of law and effective regulatory oversight but believes that all enforcement actions should be conducted in a transparent, fair and business-friendly manner. Legitimate businesses, he added, should not be subjected to unnecessary harassment, uncertainty or coercive measures.
Saigol said the chamber continues to receive feedback from various markets indicating that some enforcement actions are being carried out without prior notice and without giving traders a fair opportunity to present their case.
He reiterated that while the business community respects regulatory authorities and supports lawful enforcement, it is essential that all actions remain within clearly defined legal boundaries. This, he said, will help ensure transparency, accountability and the protection of legitimate commercial activity while maintaining business confidence and economic stability.
He added that the government and the business community are partners in economic development and prosperity, and that both effective law enforcement and the protection of citizens’ rights are essential for sustainable economic growth.
