ISLAMABAD: The Sensitive Price Indicator (SPI)-based weekly inflation decreased by 0.56 per cent during the week ended on June 4, 2026 for the combined consumption group, the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) reported on Friday.
According to PBS data, SPI for the week under review declined to 355.55 points as compared to 357.54 points recorded in the previous week.On a year-on-year (YoY) basis, the SPI increased by 14.75 per cent.
The weekly SPI with base year 2015-16=100 covers 17 urban centres and 51 essential items for all expenditure groups.However, the SPI for the lowest consumption group (up to Rs 17,732) increased by 0.32 per cent to 336.62 points from 335.56 points.The SPI for consumption groups of Rs17,733-22,888 also increased by 0.04 per cent, while for groups of Rs22,889-29,517, Rs29,518-44,175 and above Rs44,175 it decreased by 0.14 per cent, 0.38 per cent and 0.88 per cent, respectively.
During the week, out of 51 items, prices of 22 items (43.14 per cent) increased, 10 items (19.61 per cent) decreased, while 19 items (37.25 per cent) remained stable.On a week-on-week (WoW) basis, the items that witnessed decline in prices included chicken which declined by 9.48 per cent, followed by garlic 9.13 per cent, diesel 7.01 per cent, petrol 6.8 per cent, pulse gram 0.38 per cent, pulse mash 0.34 per cent, pulse moong 0.11 per cent, mustard oil 0.04 per cent, beef 0.02 per cent and firewood by 0.01 per cent.
On the other hand, major increases were observed in the prices of onions which rose by 28.16 per cent, followed by potatoes 21.91 per cent. Others include tomatoes by 9.56 per cent, bananas 1.2 per cent, vegetable ghee (2.5 kg) 0.91 per cent, washing soap 0.68 per cent, LPG 0.66 per cent, cooking oil (5 litre) 0.64 per cent, fresh milk 0.61 per cent, wheat flour 0.59 per cent and cigarettes by 0.57 per cent.
On a year-on-year (YoY) basis, prices of potatoes declined by 38.44 per cent, followed by eggs 26.67 per cent, pulse gram 22.61 per cent, sugar 15.56 per cent, salt powder 13.26 per cent, chicken 12.84 per cent, pulse masoor 12.5 per cent and pulse moong by 4.51 per cent over the same period of last year, the PBS reported.
Major increase was recorded in the prices of onions by 100.68 per cent, followed by wheat flour 59.88 per cent, electricity charges for Q1 59.4 per cent, LPG 57.09 per cent, petrol 50.6 per cent, diesel 49.63 per cent, tomatoes 20.62 per cent and mutton 15.86 per cent.
Prices of chilies powder, beef, bananas and powdered milk also increased over the corresponding week of last year.
