Rawalpindi: The Rawalpindi Traffic Police carried out extensive enforcement operations against transport operators involved in passenger overloading and overcharging during the previous month.

According to official figures, action was taken against 1,191 vehicles and drivers for carrying passengers beyond the permitted capacity, while 463 vehicles and drivers were penalised for charging fares in excess of approved rates.

The traffic police also suspended four driving licenses for negligent and reckless driving, registered one FIR, and impounded 23 vehicles by sending them to police stations. Speaking on the occasion, CTO Farhan Aslam said that special emphasis had been placed on curbing overcharging and overloading in view of the Eid-ul-Adha travel rush and to ensure the safety of passengers and their property.

He said that before launching the enforcement campaign, transport stand operators, vehicle owners and drivers were provided awareness regarding road safety and traffic regulations, and were also issued advance warnings.

The CTO added that public service drivers bear a significant responsibility for the lives and property of passengers. He said some drivers jeopardize passenger safety for temporary financial gain, adding that no leniency would be shown to those found violating traffic laws and endangering public safety.
