ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court on Tuesday sought a formal response from the federal government regarding non-payment of the announced financial compensation package to the families of martyrs of the Army Public School (APS) tragedy.

A three-member bench, headed by Justice Muhammad Ali Mazhar, conducted hearing of the case.

Counsel for the petitioners submitted that the comprehensive compensation package formally announced by the government for the aggrieved families of APS martyrs had still not been provided. Justice Muhammad Ali Mazhar observed that if the compensation package had already been granted to certain individuals, the same relief should be extended equally to all affected families. He directed the federal government to clearly clarify the exact extent to which the prior judgment of the Peshawar High Court (PHC) had been implemented.

The apex court also considered a contempt petition filed by the families of martyrs concerning the alleged non-implementation of the Peshawar High Court’s decision. The High Court had previously dismissed the contempt application.

Following the preliminary hearing, the Supreme Court adjourned further proceedings in the case for an indefinite period and directed the federal government to submit its detailed response.
