ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Monday issued notices to the federal government seeking a response over the non-appointment of the Indus Water Commissioner, describing the matter as a serious issue.

Justice Arbab Muhammad Tahir heard the petition filed by Judicial Activism. Advocate Azhar Siddiq appeared on behalf of the petitioner and submitted before the court that the position has been vacant since September 1, 2025. Under Article 8 of the Indus Water Treaty, the Indus Water Commissioner must be a permanent appointment, the counsel argued.

During the proceedings, the court called Deputy Attorney General Sajid Tanoli to the rostrum and directed him to take instructions from the government and inform the court. “This is a serious issue,” the court observed. The court adjourned further hearing of the case until June 9.
