One of the most pressing environmental crises facing Karachi is plastic pollution. From the shores of Seaview to the banks of the Lyari River and the bustling markets of Saddar, single-use plastic bags, bottles and packaging choke drains, pollute the sea and enter the food chain as microplastics. A practical, scalable solution is the establishment of community recycling hubs, paired with a city-wide shift toward biodegradable alternatives and aggressive public awareness. These hubs would partner with local recycling industries to process waste and promote affordable biodegradable bags made from jute, banana fibre or cornstarch.
This solution could significantly reduce the 2,273 tons of uncollected waste entering the marine ecosystem daily. By diverting plastics from landfills and oceans, it would decrease microplastic contamination, improve drainage to reduce urban flooding and lower greenhouse gas emissions from plastic production.
