Excessive use of heavy, spicy meat dishes on regular basis may cause problems

Rawalpindi:Eating heavy and spicy meat dishes in excessive quantities, on a regular basis for days, on and after Eidul Azha may cause stomach related problems and other complications even in apparently healthy persons while cause severe complications among chronic patients suffering from diabetes, hypertension, hepatitis B or C, liver and kidney diseases, heart diseases or gastric ulcers.

Health experts say that eating meat in moderate quantity on Eid days may not cause any problem among healthy persons but the patients of diabetes whose kidneys are not working properly should eat only a little quantity of meat to avoid complications.

The diabetics whose kidneys are working properly can eat meat dishes in moderate quantities like healthy persons. Experts believe that the regular use of meat dishes on the three days of Eidul Azha or for a whole week may cause problems even in healthy persons. The chronic patients of hepatitis B and C are medically advised to eat only a little quantity of meat.

According to experts, the chronic patients of hepatitis B and C with ascites, accumulation of fluid in abdomen, or having history of blood vomiting can eat only up to 40 grams of meat in 24 hours.

Chronic hepatitis B and C patients may fall unconscious or have blood vomiting or fits if they consume a little heavier quantity of meat. Experts say that people with complaints of peptic or duodenal ulcer should also restrict themselves to use of limited quantities of meat and should avoid regular use of meat on Eid days and afterwards.

It is important that the majority of our population is habitual of taking heavy meals particularly on Eidul Azha. Every year during the Eid days, the allied hospitals along with other public sector hospitals in the region receive a heavy influx of patients at their emergency departments mostly with the complaints of problems related to the digestive system.

Experts say that due to digestive system problems, patients with heart diseases may experience worsening of chest pain. Gastro manifests as vomiting, diarrhoea and severe pain in abdomen with cramps while small intestine with previous ulcers may get damaged and perforated.

People should be aware of the fact that the digestive system emergencies are caused by overeating while complications occur in patients with diabetes, hypertension, liver and kidney diseases or gastric ulcers and like patients must take extra care in diet. Health experts say that excessive consumption of meat whether it is mutton or beef is harmful for both healthy persons and chronic patients.
