Eidul Azha is supposed to be a time of joy and sacrifice. However, for many families in Pakistan, it has become a source of stress and financial pressure. Animal prices in mandis have risen to unaffordable levels this year, putting the tradition of Qurbani out of reach for many middle class and lower income families. Mandis are also poorly managed, overcrowded and set up in locations that cause massive traffic jams for days. Residents living near these temporary markets suffer from noise, waste and blocked roads. After Eid, improper disposal of animal waste creates serious hygiene and health issues across the city. In future, the authorities must regulate animal prices, set up proper mandis with designated waste disposal systems and ensure smooth traffic management during this period.
